from an Owner
Ibizan Hounds are certainly
wonderful dogs to live with. They are a
soft-hearted, affectionate breed with a constant, sweet and loyal disposition. Often
clowns, friendly and outgoing with strangers, an Ibizan is always
looking for the next person to give it a pat on the head, kiss or treat.
The Ibizan is a high-energy dog when outdoors, but once it has matured,
it is a good house pet. In the yard, you will find them running
and playing; in the house, lounging. Remember, they are exuberant
as puppies, needing exercise, and firm yet gentle discipline. You
will know when company has arrived, as Ibizans are alert and make very
good watch dogs (not guard dogs). They will fit well into a
household with children as well as with other pets, large and small.
The Ibizan should never show signs of shyness or aggression towards
people. This is not their nature.

 | Coat:
Wirehaired
and shorthaired.
AKC Height:
The height of dogs is 23 1/2 inches to 27 1/2 inches at the withers. Bitches are 22 1/2 to 26 inches at the withers.
Color: White
or Red (from deep red to yellow-red called "lion"), solid
or in any combination. |
 |
Basic
Requirements Ibizans need a yard with a tall fence and room to run and play. They need occasional
brushing and bathing. Their coat does shed somewhat,
but if they are brushed
twice a week this will keep shedding to a minimum. Ibizan Hounds want to be a
part of the family.

Temperament
Happy, energetic and
inquisitive are terms often used to describe
the breed. They love children, and
are readily trainable. Shy or aggressive dogs are not the norm.
|
 | Health-
(Health dictionary link - click here)
Generally a healthy breed,
there are a few problems to watch for.
Allergies, Seizures, Deafness, Axonal Dystrophy, Hip Dysplasia, Juvenile
Cataracts, Retinal Dysplasia, Collie Eye, Mitral Valve Prolapse, Wobblers. Since hearing
and eye problems are on the rise in the breed, it is recommended that puppies
are tested for hearing (BAER test without anesthesia) and eye problems (CERF
exam) before going to their new homes.

Myths
It
is not true that Ibizans dislike cats. Although they would probably chase strange
cats that might wander into their yard, Ibizans and cats that are raised together
can become great friends.
